Preface

Currently, incineration is the most cost effective method of waste disposal in Singapore, which is lack of land recourses. This method can make a 90% effective reduction of waste volume.

To fulfill this purpose, four incineration plants have been built in the last three decades. And one of them, Tuas Incarnation Plant (TIP) was exactly where our “garbage trip” began.

Completed in 1986, TIP was the second refuse incineration plant in SG, which cost S$200 million to construct and owns an incineration capacity of 1,700 tones per day.

After incineration, some remaining ash, together with the non-combustible refuse will be disposed by landfill method. The Semakau landfill was planned for this. Our second visit is to TUAS Marine Transfer Station (TMTS), which is the only way to the Singapore’s’ only landfill.

Started at the Administration building in NTU, we spent a pleasant afternoon to enjoy our outgoing visit, which is organized by our Professor Wang.J.Y, an expert in solid waste magement.

Now, let me guide you to our visit.

  • Tuas IP, but the high chimney was not captured in the picture.

  • Refuse Incineration Process overview

  • What are they fixing on in the picture?

  • Exactly, the answer is the No.17 refuse discharging door.

  • Actually, refuse collection vehicles dischage the waste into the big bunker through the 23 discharging doors. From this picture, you can see the refuse in the bunker.

  • You can never imagine how it smells, even the odor is prevented from escaping by keeping the bunker at sub-atmospheric pressure .

  • The smellling was so special to sustain even we stand on the window 10 meters above the refuse surface.

  • What are they watching?

  • The answer is the 3-refuse-cranes.

  • It dragged the refuse out from the bunker and sent it too the incineration plant.

  • The Central Control Room

  • Is the Previous Tailand President? who 信?

  • He enjoys his work here

  • TUAS Marine Transfer Station–seems not bad..

  • A brocher was given in TMTS, about the landfill process

  • The Recipation Hall, waste was shipped here and sent to the SEMAKAU Landfill via a 3-hrs journey.

  • I am interested in this landfill and want to have a walk there in the near future.
